This video lecture from Group VA and Group VIA Elements (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers the Birkeland and Eyed’s process for manufacturing nitric acid on industrial scale. The major stages in the process include the formation of nitric oxide from air through an electric arc, oxidation of nitric oxide into nitrogen dioxide, dissolving nitrogen dioxide in water in the absence of air and finally oxidizing the nitrous acid too into nitric acid and recycling the by-products in the previous stages.
