This video lecture from Aldehydes and Ketones (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers the oxidation reactions of ketones. Unlike aldehydes, ketones are very difficult to oxidize and only strong oxidizing agents like acidic dichromate and acidic permanganates oxidize ketones to carboxylic acids. The difficulty in oxidation is because of the sigma bond cleavage involved in the reaction which obeys Popoff’s rule (carbonyl group is retained by smaller alkyl group).
