The reaction follows the mechanism as explained previously in the chapter. It is a base catalyzed Nucleophilic addition reaction which yields cyanohydrins as adducts. The adduct contains a hydroxyl group and cyano- group attached to the same carbon atom. The name of corresponding substrate is then proceeded by cyanohydrins at the end.
