FSc Chemistry Book2, CH 8, LEC 9: By Grignard Reagents, Aldehydes and Ketones (Part 4)

This video lecture from Aliphatic Hydrocarbons (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers the preparation of Alkanes by two methods. Firstly from a special class of organo-metallic compounds called the Grignard Reagents (Alkyl magnesium halides) by their reaction with an active hydrogen containing compound like nitric acid or water. Secondly from a class of compounds containing carbonyl group at terminal carbon or otherwise, known as Aldehydes and Ketones. Their reduction (addition of hydrogen) yields alkanes and it takes place in the presence of suitable catalysts giving rise to two methods, Clemmenson’s reduction and Wolf-Kishner’s reduction.
